A good outing – Family Tents

It was my son’s vacation time and we all wanted to go on a short trip to some quiet place outside the hubbub of the city.  It was a very busy season and getting hotel accommodation was out of the question.  We enquired as many travel agents as possible but all that they could do was book our journey tickets somehow but none of them could promise a decent hotel accommodation.

Nice to watch them on roads

There is one city in the southern part of India in the state of Karnataka, called Mysore.  It is a beautiful city which was once a royal province and has the memories of royalty even to this date.  The city has a beautiful place which was once the residence of erstwhile kings and has been maintained beautifully to this date.  It is not uncommon to watch workers in the old royal uniforms going about their work on important festive occasions.  Millions of tourists from all corners of the world visit this city and admire the beauty of this city and this palace is one of the main tourist attractions.

There is one festival called “Dussehra “which normally falls in the month of October every year and a grand procession takes place from the palace and passes through the city.  It is a spectacular event and there re many cultural shows during this time.  People rush from their homes to see this even and all the important are lined with innumerable people who gather to watch the procession.  During this time, the royal horsemen decorate their horses with velvet and all kinds of adornments and ride their horses as a part of the procession with the equipment.  It is a real treat to watch this spectacular event.  No resident of Mysore misses this event during Dussehra.

You can watch them in turf clubs

Now since horse back riding with the necessary equipment is a dwindling picture, the younger generation does not even know what it is to ride a horse and the thrill that the experience can give.  Other than in the movies, the only place where they can watch them probably is the turf club now.  But then, children are not encouraged to go to turf club owing o the fear that it might inculcate concept in them as they grow.  It is only the people from the upper stratum of society who frequent these turf clubs.

Whenever I have happened to pass by these turf clubs, I kind of feel sad for these horses and the jockeys.  The poor animals are overused so that the people who bet on them are able to make money.  I still cannot understand why the turf clubs were started in the first place and why these poor animals are unnecessarily made to run day after day.  We all know very well what happens to them when they grow old and are incapable of running for their masters any more.  If it is only to fill the pockets of those who wager and the companies that organize these shows, should the poor creatures be tormented this way, and they have to run relentlessly irrespective of the weather, however inclement it might be.

They are slowly diminishing

In the sixties and seventies, it used to be a common sight in India to see horse driven carriages.  The petrol driven three wheelers were not so much in vogue then and people preferred to travel by these carriage if they had to travel short distances.  The horse carriage drivers did not charge too much from the travelers and hearing the sound of hooves was very common those days as opposed to the vehicular horns which create noise pollution in the present days.

Then started the vociferous oppositions from many animal lovers and enthusiasts that animals should not be tortured in this manner and they should not be used for transporting people, which was inhuman.  The government too gave a patient hearing to their demands and slowly horse carriages were taken off the roads of big cities and petrol driven vehicles started replacing them and gradually the roads were infested with them and the consequent atmospheric pollution and noise pollution because of these automotives.  The legacies left behind by the royal families started diminishing and the subsequent generation did not have the opportunity of horse back riding or enjoying the picture of horse carriage drivers occupying the road with their equipment.

My dream was fulfilled

I have always been enamored of horses.  I love the sound of their hooves and the graceful figure they make when they trot or gallop.  I am not exactly a movie buff but if a movie consists of lots of horses and anything related to them, I will not miss it, be it in any language.  That is one reason I love watching period films which show lot of ancient history, and they will invariably show heroes and other characters astride horses.

Having watched so many movies on horses since my childhood, I always dreamt of riding a horse.  The opportunity once came calling when I was in my teens.  Our school management had arranged for a school trip for all of us and we were taken to countryside in our school bus.  The excursion was a lovely with lot of scope to walk amidst nature and enjoy the lovely greens around us.  There we came across some horses owned by a village head and he was generous enough to allow us to mount his horses, but under the vigilance of his workers.  We all took turns in riding the horses and we were thrilled to bits.  It was first chance to enjoy horse back riding with equipment and it will always remain in my memory.

Indian Republic Day

Every country must be having its own way of celebrating its Republic Day, But Indian Republic Day celebrated on the 26th of January every year is something beautiful and spectacular and a foreign dignitary that is the President or Prime Minister of a foreign nation is invited as the chief guest to witness the show.

Never ride without horse equipment

Once we had been to Gulmarg, which is a beautiful hill station on the Himalayas in Kashmir and is fully covered with snow during winter.  The beauty of this place is breathtaking and is very soothing and has an inexplicable calming effect on the mind.  It could be because Himalayas have always been associated with solitude and spirituality.

Though we were well equipped with our winter wear, covering the distance by foot on the snow was a tough task as our feet kept getting stuck in the snow, making our movement difficult.  We then decided to hire horses for our passage up the hill.  We sat on the horses whose saddles were not up to the mark.  All the same, we decided to ride them and the bones of the horse kept hurting me badly during the ride.  I must say I developed severe bruises and stiffness on my back by the time I got down, which took not less than three days to go!

While traveling to the temple of Vaishno Devi on the Himalayas, we come across many old and sick people who cannot travel by foot on account of the various curves and the long distance.  Compared to what it was in the eighties, concrete roads have been made now and youngsters enjoy talking and walking the distance.

Of course, there are some old people who prefer to go horse riding.  Since the most of the horses used thereat are old Arabian horses, riding them is quite scary and there are always attendants to take care of the pilgrim when they ride the horses.  One funny thing about the horses is that while they trot, they have this habit of going to the edge of the road on the side of the gorge and trip slightly, which is very scary and you will have heart in your mouth, especially when you look at the gorge which is very, very deep!

I got a chance to go horse riding

There is one temple called “Vaishno Devi” on one of the hills of Himalayas in Kashmir, which is on the extreme northern part of India.  This temple is visited by lakhs of people throughout the year.  It is believed that if one visits this temple and offers prayers to the goddess thereat, the wishes of the person are fulfilled.

Until the late eighties, the access to the temple was very difficult, as the route to the temple consisted of climbing the hill, which had no proper road and was strewn with pebbles, sand and stones. Many would cover the distance of more 14 km by foot and those who could not, would ride the horses or ponies which were available on rent.  When I visited that temple along with my husband, though I could walk, for the sheer pleasure of riding a horse, I went horse riding, which just had a saddle and no other horse equipment.  I enjoyed the ride and was scared at the same time.

I enjoyed watching horse riding

As a child I always loved watching such movies which contained horses and horse riding.  One movie that truly fascinated me as a child was “McKenna’s Gold “, where the two famous heroes and heart throbs of their times, Omar Sharif and Gregory Peck are always on the horses, almost throughout the length of the movie.

I must have watched that movie at least half a dozen times just to observe the ease with which the heroes mount and dismount the horses, that too with bare minimum horse equipment.  It looked as if they had been trained well in horse riding prior to shooting of the movie to make it look authentic.  They were totally at home atop the horses on the tough terrains and hill tracks.  Many movies with horses have been made, but this movie was unique.

Luckily people are still able to enjoy life without going broke. A great way to have fun doing outdoor activities is going for a walk or hike with a close friend or family member. Anyone can also go by themselves. Some people go for a stroll just to clear their mind and get away from everyday issues.

It does not take much to do these activities, in fact all a person has to do is get dressed and head for the door. Getting in touch with nature is what many people are not doing nowadays. Most people work so much they do not take time out for what their mind and body needs. Fresh air is essential to life and so is taking time to stop and smell the roses.

In today’s economy people are always looking for ways to save money. People also want to take their family on trips and engage in fun activities together. More people are looking for cost effective trips that can still be enjoyable and exciting. Some people may not realize that cost efficient family fun is right outside their door. Enjoying the great outdoors should be a part of life, and it is simple but pleasurable enough to keep the family happy.

With society being full of technology it is hard to imagine interacting with life without cell phones, computers, or any other high tech gadget that most people use on a daily basis to get by. A few ideas to enjoy time with the family would be getting together for a simple ride through the country. If you pack a lunch then you can make a stop at a park picnic table and eat outdoors. Small activities like this will bring the family closer.

Do you want to go see some Horses?

My husband had just sold a guitar to a girl who lived on a horse farm in Kentucky, She saw our children and asked if they would like to go see the horses.
She also informed is that they had some smaller ponies that were well-broken in for the children to ride.

So we asked the children, knowing full well their response, If they would like to go see and maybe ride some horses. They definitely did, and so plans were made. I cannot remember the names, but we were even given names for the horses we would soon meet. But, luck would have it that somehow we never visited the farm. To this day I do not know what happened, but I was relieved, as I figured that I would have to explain the Donkey rides to the girls.

A pony ride on Donkeys

When my daughters had aged sufficiently, I decided to take them for a ride on ponies at a place I had seen advertised in the newspaper. The girls were extremely excited, to say the least, That the day long promised had arrived.
We got there and sadly I only saw Donkeys, but the girls ran quickly and wanted to ride. I simply did not have the heart to tell them the difference, so they rode. Then I spied a circle of ponies, but saw a long line waiting, too, whereas my daughters had the freedom to the donkey’s all to themselves. They rode around and around, enjoying their day alot.
We drove home and I was silent wondering wether I ought to explain the subtle differences between ponies And donkeys before they played with their my little pony dolls. but I decided that
It wasn’t necessary and for all I know they think ponies all have items stamped on their butt, magnets in their hoofs, and designer colors.
Now just to decide if I ought to tell the truth to my husband.

But What about a Saddle?

The last time I went horse back riding, I was asked if I had experience riding. Little did I know, this was because we were going to be given horses to break in. Though we each had a wild horse to ride, one of the horses broke free entirely and ran free.

Brennan, a neighbor, offered to go after the horse that literally ran free and headed for the hills. I joined everyone in commenting that the horse had no saddle, but he went forward anyway and caught the horse home without a saddle. He rode bareback on a wild horse, which to me was a real accomplishment.
From that experience forward, I was able to decide that I was not a Hardcore horse rider, And danger can come at anytime if you allow it. Who would’ve thought that simply telling that you had experience would lead to that situation. a horse could’ve been lost.

On the Sand Dunes

My grandparents owned a farm and a great deal of land, part of which was a gravel pit, full of Sand. This is where but we don’t have my story takes place. One day, I was riding a horse and showing off a bit by constantly galloping faster. until we reached the sand. The horse first of all wanted to turn back and head for the barn, but I had gotten it this far there was no turning back.
My brothers laughed at me all the while I tried to maneuver the hose down the embankment. I did manage, but it was terrifying. If you have never ridden a horse down an embankment let alone a sandy one where the horse doesn’t have sure footing, It is not easy. But just as I reached the bottom We found an angry badger who had built its home in the hillside.
So, we returned home with a great story to tell anyone who would listen.

Connie the Horse girl

I loved to ride horse back, and did so quite often with my friend Connie, It was amusing to us all how she ran. She had endurance and a genuine appreciation of the sport.

Then track season came and Connie had a Certain Gallop to her stride which I naturally assumed came from her horseback riding. She also had very long hair that shimmered in the wind in waves like a horse’s tail when she ran. She soon became known as Connie the Horse girl.

As if being called out to as the Horse girl wasn’t bad enough, Her favorite food was Apples. To top matters off, someone claimed to see her drinking from a trough after a race. And it was also claimed that she snacked in the locker room on grain.

Now I am unsure if Connie actually did any of this, but she was a great riding partner and friend, horse girl literally or not.

A horse-riding story of fun and enjoyment

One day I got a call from my closest friend John asking me to get ready for some fun and excitement this weekend and asked me to get ready in one hour as he was coming to pick me up. I was not surprised because John does such instant planning most often and so I prepared for the weekend holiday but when John arrived I was astonished to find him on his favorite horse with equestrian clothing too.

However he took me along a place which he had already booked for camping and had a portable tent along with him. There was an equestrian campground that took care of the horse and I must say it was the ultimate fun and a very memorable trip for me. I felt that the horse also enjoyed with both of us in an open place far away from the noise and pollution of the city life. Before this trip I was not very comfortable with horse riding but riding it alone and with John too removed all fear from my mind.

If your hobby is horse riding you must be aware that there is nothing so beautiful and enjoyable than camping with your horse. But for this you need to do some preparation and planning before finally taking your horse along with you on a holiday camp.
